Toronto - Toronto Waterfront Trail

For over a decade, along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence river, a transformation has been underway. In 1992 a Regeneration Trust was set up to help broker the development of the Toronto waterfront - a Royal Commission report followed, that put forward 80 recommendations for the area including the creation of a non-stop waterfront trail along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

In 1995 The Trust opened the Waterfront Trail – 350 kilometres of almost unbroken trails connecting parkland, historic and cultural sites, conservation areas and recreational space. 1995 also witnessed the release of the Lake Ontario Greenway Strategy - a blueprint for protecting, restoring, and enhancing the waterfront.

Today, the Waterfront trail comprises almost 500 miles of designated trails and is used by people from all walks of life - from tourists to commuters. Many communities live on the trail and there are over 180 parks and natural areas along the way.  A series of itineraries based around lakeside festivals have been arranged and families can explore family friendly trips that are part of ‘Tastes of the Trail’.

Work still continues today to improve and expand the Toronto Waterfront Trail, with millions of dollars earmarked for development projects.
