Toronto - Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) One of the largest and most prominent museums on the whole of the American continent, The ROM contains over 6 million pieces and more than 40 galleries making it one of the major world centres for natural history and world culture. Of particular note at the ROM is the collection of dinosaur specimens, with 25 fully-mounted skeletons, including “Gordo” - the ROM's massive 27-metre (90-foot) Barosaurus skeleton - the largest dinosaur on permanent display in Canada and one of only two Barosaurus skeletons on display in the world. Other featured exhibits on display include the full skeleton cast of a Tyrannosaurus rex. There are numerous World Culture galleries at the ROM displaying pieces many thousands of years old. Many noteworthy collections of Eastern and African art and European and Canadian history are housed in these galleries. Since the Museum was established in 1912 it has undergone several expansions – the most striking being the latest or third expansion. Scheduled for completion by 2010, the third expansion incorporates the controlled chaotic architectural style of deconstructivism. The controversial design has received praise and criticism in equal measure being called both ‘oppressive, angsty, and hellish’ and ‘..a monument’.
