Toronto - Casa Loma

This example of European elegance and splendour is described as ‘Canada’s foremost castle’ and is a popular tourist attraction in Toronto. Built between 1911 and 1914 as a home for Canadian financier Sir Henry Pellatt, Casa Loma has an architectural character unique in Toronto and at its time of construction was the largest private residence in North America with 98 rooms and 5 acres of gardens.

During the depression of the 1920s, Sir Henry fell on hard times and was forced to leave Casa Loma in 1923. After the city seized the property in 1933 because of unpaid taxes, Casa Loma was opened to the public. In modern times, the building has been used in several movies such as X-Men, The Pacifier and The Tuxedo as well as being converted into Hogwarts for the release of the 7th Harry Potter book.
