Ottawa tourist information - Parliament Hill On the southern banks of the Ottawa River sits the home of the Canadian Parliament. The collection of gothic buildings is a popular tourist attraction in Ottawa, welcoming some 3 million visitors a year. The site covers over 27 acres and houses the Centre Block – with the Senate and House of Commons and the Peace Tower – built to commemorate the end of the First World War. The East and West blocks on Parliament Hill contain mostly offices along with lawned areas and walkways. Also known simply as ‘The Hill’, the arresting waterside location is the site of the annual Canada Day celebrations and has been used for many public gatherings such as the 9/11 Memorial Service, celebrations for the Millennium and visits by the Queen. There are numerous memorials and statues on the site largely commemorating Canadian politicians, diplomats and statesmen. http://www.parliamenthill.gc.ca/text/home_e.html
