Ottawa tourist information - The National Gallery of Canada

Since its founding in 1880, The Canadian National Gallery has grown to become the largest visual arts museum in the country and one of the nation’s premier art galleries. The gallery building could be considered a work of art in itself. The glass and granite structure is the architecturally acclaimed vision of Moshe Safdi – the man responsible for some of Canada’s most distinctive buildings.

Inside, the gallery houses a number of noted works. Although the gallery concentrates mainly on Canadian art there are works from European greats past and present including Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Warhol and Pollock. Canadian exhibits range from early aboriginal works and paintings to 20th century sculptures – all arranged chronologically and regionally.
