Ottawa tourist information - Canadian Museum of Civilization Canadian Museum of Civilization – Located in the neighbouring city of Gatineau, the Canadian Museum of Civilization is the national museum of human history and the most visited museum in the country – welcoming over 1.3 million guests a year. It’s not just the exhibitions that draw the crowds. The architecture of the building is as stunning as the museum’s river side setting. There are four main galleries at the museum displaying exhibits. The Grand Hall – The architectural centerpiece of the museum contains examples of traditional Indian housing, the largest colour photograph in the world creating a forest scene as a backdrop and the world’s largest and finest collections of Totem poles. First People’s Hall – The focus here is on the aboriginal people of Canada and their contribution to the country and their relationship with the land. The First Peoples Hall recounts the changing relationship between the Aboriginal peoples and European settlers, from being equal partners, to the colonial practices that deprived First Peoples of their power and economic independence. Canada Hall – Celebrating the history of Canada in the second millennium, from the voyages of the Norsemen across the frozen northern Atlantic wastes, to the affluence and comfort of the 19th century merchants. Actors, historical building reconstructions and historical artifacts bring the scene to life in an area of over 30,000 square feet. The Canadian Personalities Hall – Showcases 27 outstanding Canadians – the people who have helped shape the nation. The national museum also houses the The Canadian Postal Museum, Canadian Children's Museum and IMAX theatre – all found on level 2. The Canadian War Museum is close by.
